March 20 Grid Analytics Community - Strategic High-Resolution Power System Planning

When:  Mar 20, 2024 from 13:00 to 14:00 (CT)

Join the Grid Analytics Community on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 1:00 PM CT for a presentation with Q&A and open discussion on, "Strategic High-Resolution Power System Planning: Tailoring Approaches for Light-Duty and Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicles" led by Zuzhao Ye, Graduate Student Researcher at University of California Riverside.

Session Description:

Current efforts in preparing the power system for transportation electrification often face limitations: many focus exclusively on a subset of vehicles, like passenger EVs, or provide analysis at a broad geographical level, such as national or state-wide. This lack of specificity can lead to challenges in cost-efficient power grid planning and upgrades. To bridge this gap, this session explores two different data-driven approaches for power system planning, one for light-duty vehicles (LDVs) and the other for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). These approaches are tailored to the unique operational patterns of the vehicles, with LDVs typically used in residential settings, while HDVs are more commonly associated with commercial infrastructures, such as warehouses and ports. A key feature of our project is its capability to perform high-resolution analyses at the substation or feeder level, enabling utilities to engage in more precise and actionable planning.
