May 28 Safety Analytics Community - Improving GIS Data Quality for Distribution Operations

When:  May 28, 2024 from 14:00 to 15:00 (CT)

Join the Safety Analytics Community on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at 2:00 PM CT for a presentation with Q&A and open discussion on, "Improving GIS Data Quality for Distribution Operations (Ultimately Improving Safety Hazards)" led by Reid Pinkerton, WDOC Designer Associate at Oncor Electric Delivery.

Session Description:

Oncor’s Distribution Operations Center lacked visibility into the backlog and trend of severe GIS graphics defects infiltrating our Outage Management System (OMS). These errors contribute to safety hazards (due to risk of miscommunications), equipment damage risk, outage troubleshooting delays, and overall degradation of operational performance. This project has developed a new measurement system that uses spatial analytics tools to identify discrepancies in the GIS database. Generation 1 of this project, on track for completion by July 2024, focuses on two key variables that strongly contribute to the effectiveness of OMS as a visual communication and operational safety tool: 1. Accuracy of the device ID attribute of switches in OMS compared to real-world labels; 2. Consistency between feature geometry and connectivity model relationships. Resolving the backlog of errors requires caution and many field verifications to ensure the map is an accurate representation of reality. Preventing new errors will involve implementing a user feedback mechanism to improve communication of stakeholder expectations to suppliers, enabling awareness and accountability.
